2011: Extensions for the CMControl, CT Analyzer and DIRANA, further developments for the CPC 100, MPD 600 and PTL, opening of the new location in Mexico City
The CMControl, OMICRON's front panel control unit for CMC testing devices, has been further improved and now includes a testing tool for electricity meters. The OMICRON Protection Testing Library (PTL) has also been extended. This Testing template library for protective relays now includes more than 250 relay models with corresponding test plans. The MPD 600, a testing device for measuring partial discharges in primary testing, has also received several new features. These include the UVS 610, which allows partial discharges to be measured in fluid-insulated power transformers.
The CT Analyzer, the testing solution for current transformers, has a new software version providing new accessories. With the optionally available CP SB2 switch box, secondary switchable current transformers can now be tested without having to be re-wired. The new improved software also enables residual magnetism measurements.
New software versions have also been created for the CPC 100 primary testing device, all products in the MPD range used for partial discharge testing, as well as the MI 600, a testing device for capacitance, dissipation and power factors. DIRANA, the testing device for moisture determination in insulation, has also received a software update which includes new comparative data for test objects with oil-paper insulation. This software now supports five languages.
OMICRON opened a new office in Mexico City in the summer of 2011. With responsibility for sales and technical support in Latin America, OMICRON Energy Solutions de México, S.A. de C.V., represents a major move closer to our customers in this region.
2010: Introduction of CMC 353, CMC 850 and CMControl, new Test Universe Software TU 2.40, Introduction of Primary Test Manager, SVScout and cm_FCS, OMICRON awarded best employer in Austria
In 2010 OMICRON expanded its product portfolio in the area of secondary testing by introducing several new devices: CMC 353, CMC 850 and CMControl.
The CMC 353 is a compact and powerful test set for three-phase relay testing applications, ideal for commissioning and maintenance tasks. The CMC 850 is the world's first protection test set dedicated to IEC 61850. The new front panel control unit, CMControl, can be used with different CMC test sets (CMC 356, 353, 256plus and 256-6). It provides an intuitive touch screen operation and is ideal for quick and easy manual testing on-site.
In addition to the numerous new devices, several new software developments have been introduced.
The new Primary Test Manager is a full workflow support for the CPC 100, which enables PC-controlled analysis of the condition of transformers and other assets such as bushings and LTCs. SVScout is a measurement and testing tool for visualizing IEC 61850 Sampled Values. Additionally, OMICRON has developed the field calibration software cm_FCS, which supports users when performing a calibration or a self check, and is available free-of-charge.
The year 2010 has also brought several updates of existing products and software. Version 2.40 of the CMC control software, TestUniverse, is now available, and the DIRANA and FRAnalyzer software has been expanded to include additional functions.
In 2010 OMICRON participated once again in a study conducted by the Great Place to Work® Institute and received an award for best employer in Austria within the major enterprises category. Due to this top placement OMICRON was ranked among the 25 best workplaces in Europe. Additionally, OMICRON won a special prize for the employment and integration of people with disabilities.
2009: 25 years of OMICRON, opening of OMICRON Service Center Germany, launch of Chinese website, new Test Universe Software TU 2.30, new TestBase Version 2.15, CT Analyzer approved for calibration, release of IED Scout 2.0

The new OMICRON Service Center Germany was opened in Erlangen. This modern, well-equipped facility provides 40 attractive workstations in a pleasant environment and is tailormade for OMICRON Training Courses and expert forums.
Customer satisfaction is a key goal for OMICRON and good communication is therefore vital. With the launch of our Chinese website, our Chinese-speaking customers now have direct access to the very latest information about our products and services.
In 2009 OMICRON launched the new Test Universe Software 2.30 with many useful features and enhancements as well as the new TestBase Version 2.15. Furthermore the IED Scout 2.0, a software tool for engineers working with IEC 61850 devices, was released and the CT Analyzer was approved for calibration and on-site measurements of current transformers (with an accuracy class of >= 0.2 in line with the general calibration standards).
2008: Launch of CMC 356 and CMC 256plus, foundation of Middle East office and award by the Great Place to Work Institute
The CMC 356 is the universal solution for testing all relay generations and types and was launched at the beginning of that year. It is the ideal tool for various testing tasks in substation commissioning and maintenance and it is the first choice for all applications requiring the highest versatility, amplitude and power.
The very successful CMC 256 just got even better when the CMC 256plus, "the reference" Protection Relay Test Set and Universal Calibrator and convinces with the highest versatility and accuracy, was introduced.
In February 2008 OMICRON took another step to being closer to its large customer base in the Gulf Region with the opening of a new Middle East office in Bahrain.
OMICRON has again been rated to be among the 50 best European employers (small and medium sized workplaces) and has been awarded for it by the Great Place to Work Institute.
2007: Launch of MPD 600 and DIRANA and continuing expansion
With the new MPD 600 Partial Discharge Analysis System OMICRON now offers a very accurate, perfectly reliable and light-weighted tool for the detection, location, recording and analysis of partial discharge events in many different applications. This first fully synchronous multi-channel partial discharge analysis system from OMICRON was designed by mtronix.
In April OMICRON presented DIRANA, a Dielectric Response Analyzer for the fast dual-channel measurement of Oil-Paper HV insulation in Power transformers, bushings, cables and generators with subsequent moister assessment. The product has gotten world wide positive feedback, especially regarding the fast measurement time, smallness and user friendly software.
OMICRON could continue its successful story and was growing continuously. The OMICRON team has now increased to more than 250 employees worldwide and the expansion of the OMICRON Development Center (ODC) in Austria could be completed. In parallel, the new Berlin office, where the OMICRON Monitoring team and the mtronix team are located, was opened in December.
2006: Majority holding of German technology leader in the field of electrical partial discharge measurement
Since November this year the German company mtronix, based in Berlin, is part of the OMICRON group. mtronix was founded in 1997 in Berlin as a spin-off from the Technical University Berlin. By then the specialized team had already gathered a long experience of research in the field of sophisticated electronic measuring systems for astronautics, power and medical engineering.
By taking over the majority of the German business mtronix, OMICRON not only extends its range of services in the field of test and measurement engineering for electrical power systems, but also provides access to new market segments.
2004: Launch of CP TD 1, new Software TU 2.0 and foundation of France Office
During that year, OMICRON has consolidated its position in the Transformer testing market with the launch of the CP TD 1 equipment for testing Power transformer insulation.
The new Test Universe 2.0 Software, launched in October 2004 offers new dimensions in automated testing and sets also a new benchmark in quick and easy manual testing.
Earlier in the year the branch office in Paris, France was established to assure best customer service in the region.
2003: New business fields – Asset Management Optimization Services
In the first years of the millennium, OMICRON further developed into a solution provider on a broader basis. Equipped with the know how gathered from years of customer interaction, services for asset management and testing optimization were developed and established in selected regions.
2002: From Angola to Zimbabwe – OMICRON exports to 100 countries worldwide
OMICRON received an order from the 100th country Oman (Middle East) in July 2002.
2001: Entering the Primary Testing Market and foundation of Shanghai Office
OMICRON entered the primary testing market with the CPC 100. Similar to what happened 10 years earlier in the secondary testing market with the introduction of the CM-line, the CP line product family now sets new standards in primary testing. The CPC 100 is a worldwide unique multifunctional system which allows for automated testing of power transformers, CTs, VTs, resistance testing, and much more.
At the end of 2001 a branch office of OMICRON Asia was founded in Shanghai to support the market development in China.
2000: Further growth – intensify close customer relationship
The OMICRON team had now increased to more than 100 employees which warranted a move to larger premises. The OMICRON development center (ODC) was purpose-built in Klaus, Austria to house the growing team. The ODC gives room for about 150 people.
In parallel, OMICRON Asia in Hong Kong was founded to provide the customers in the Asia/Pacific region with the best possible service. More than 50 representatives and distributors in all parts of the world further strengthen OMICRON's close relationship to its customers.
1999: Market launch of CMC 256 and foundation of OMICRON Spain and England
The CMC 256, offering the highest level of versatility and unique measurement and transient recording functionality, was launched in 1999. In the same year, new subsidiaries were established in Madrid, Spain and Stafford, England.
1998: ISO Certification
In 1998 OMICRON took the next big step towards assuring comprehensive quality for its customers: The TÜV Bavaria tested and approved OMICRON's quality system according to ISO 9001.
1996: Reaching World Market Leader status in a niche segment of power engineering
Only a few years after entering the field of protection testing, OMICRON became world market leader in this niche segment of power engineering. Within that year, the export rate went up to 98%. The worldwide success of the CMC was strongly linked to the light-weight hardware, user-friendly software, outstanding customer support and unmatched product reliability record.
To assure the further success of the company, the new test set CMC 156, even more compact and lighter than the CMC 56 due to the newest technologies used, was launched.
1994: Internationalization – Foundation of OMICRON USA and OMICRON Germany
OMICRON became truly international with the foundation of a subsidiary in Houston, Texas. Additionally, OMICRON Germany was set up to take over tasks in the fields of training, consulting, and commissioning.
1992: Entrance to International Markets
OMICRON´s technological product superiority convinced Siemens Germany to become distributor of OMICRON relay test equipment. Within only a few years the newcomer OMICRON had the reputation of offering the best system of this kind in the international market with the CMC 56.
1990: First Step into Protection Engineering
As the market size for the telecommunication solutions was very limited, OMICRON decided to utilize its development know how in a different area. OMICRON´s expertise in software and communication techniques provided the basis for the development of a revolutionary new test set. This new test set utilized the latest technology with an innovative new philosophy for testing protection and measurement devices in utilities.
1984: Foundation of OMICRON electronics GmbH in Hohenems, Austria
In 1984 OMICRON was founded by Rainer Aberer based in Hohenems, Austria. The goal was to develop software in the field of telecommunications. These standard software products were successfully sold to renowned companies such as ABB, DaimlerChrysler, NASA, Motorola, and National Semiconductor.
